Today, I will talk to you about controlling the disk space of virtual machines with certain limits at the drive level (C, D, /, / boot ..) without writing Super Metric with vROPS 8. One of my customers wanted to be aware of this before their virtual machines’ disks were full. However, we had to do this for each drive connected to the virtual machine. There are many common solutions for this. Super Metric is the first solution that comes to mind and there are some who have written very successful articles on this subject. I want to tell you that you can reach a solution by simplifying the complexity of the issue.
With vROPS 8 version, it gets Guest File System Information in metrics it collects. Under this, it defaults to C and D for use on Windows machines and /, / boot, / home directories for use on Linux machines.
By using these metrics, you can monitor your problem and your virtual machines where C, D, /, / boot, / home directories are commonly used (you probably use these disks minimum in your entire environment).
Let’s get to my case. First of all, I would like to listen to my customer’s problem and find the best solution myself. Therefore, when we examined the environment of my customer after this request, some VMs had too much capacity and some had small capacity. Therefore, I found it appropriate to describe symptoms. When the Virtual Machine’s C Disk is more than 95 percent full:
I have defined two different symptoms, the C Disk of the Virtual Machine is under 2 GB.
I’ve done the same on disk D:
When the situations I created for the disks occur at the same time, I created an alarm for them to receive mail regardless of C or D.
